About Karen Bartone
I am a contemporary American Impressionist painter working in the perceptual plein air tradition — painting directly on location, guided by a deep sensory awareness of the New England landscape and unaided by mechanical devices. My practice weaves together personal history and the luminous legacy of artists who have long sought to capture this region’s shifting light.
The loss of my father — a nuclear engineer who devoted his life to protecting others and the environment through more than fifty patented innovations — profoundly changed my path as an artist. His life was cut short in 2005 by the very radiation he worked so hard to contain, a sacrifice that drew me to the landscape as both refuge and calling.
From circular compositions inspired by my father’s technical drawings and design journals — which taught me to reimagine the everyday world — to my early experiments painting on my grandmother’s wooden bowls, my work has evolved into a practice grounded in light, memory, and perception. Through both circular and plein air paintings created across New England, I seek to transform loss into presence while honoring the fragile beauty of place.
Alongside my painting career, I have taught for more than fifteen years as a university studio arts professor, sharing the same devotion to light, atmosphere, and observation with my students.

Location
I was born in Hartford, Connecticut, and raised in southern New England, where shifting seasons, tidal shores, and woodland preserves shaped my earliest sense of landscape.
Today, I live in a shoreline town along the Connecticut coast of Long Island Sound with my husband and two cats. My studio rests beside a woodland pond, whose mirrored waters and changing light have become central to my work.
Though approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles) from New York City and Boston, this part of New England carries a distinct artistic legacy. In the late 1800s, its luminous atmosphere drew painters who gave rise to the American Impressionist movement. That same light continues to guide and inspire my painting to this day.

Career
I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Visual Arts in Painting while beginning to exhibit nationally with projects such as the Jane Goodall Climate Awareness Campaign, the Seabury World Trade Center in Boston, and the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association.
Since 2010, I have taught studio art at Eastern Connecticut State University, where I have served as a part-time professor for more than fifteen years, offering courses in painting and drawing. For the past eight years, I have also taught painting and art history at Three Rivers Community College, expanding my role as both educator and practicing artist.
Over the past three years, my work has been recognized with more than $20,000 in competitive grants, five major painting awards, and exhibitions at the Slater Museum, Benton Museum, Florence Griswold Museum, and Eli Whitney Museum. My paintings are represented in the permanent collections of the Florence Griswold Museum, several Connecticut universities, and the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association.
Recently, I began competing in plein air events across New England, earning an Honorable Mention from juror Olena Babak at only my second competition in September 2025.

Inspiration
Painting on the pond’s bank where I live has deepened my understanding of its complex visual ecosystem. In 2008, these experiences gave rise to my circular paintings — an exploration of perspective and memory that began with my grandmother’s wooden bowls and grew into an ongoing body of work evoking immersion, much like the fish-eye view of the pond itself.
My father, a nuclear engineer whose innovations safeguarded lives and the environment, passed away in 2005 — his life cut short by the very radiation he worked tirelessly to contain. In the wake of that loss, I came to see the landscape as a place of solace, strength, and legacy.
What began as a refuge gradually grew into a lifelong pursuit: painting the land with sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and memory — transforming loss into presence.
Alongside the circular series, I paint contemporary plein air works across New England, a region whose shifting seasons and luminous atmosphere once inspired the American Impressionists. Supported by professional development grants, this body of work has taken me to forests, coastlines, and villages throughout the region, connecting my practice to a larger tradition of observing light, atmosphere, and season in real time.

My Artistic Story
My artistic journey with painting began the first time I laid eyes on an original oil painting in my neighbor’s dining room. Amidst plain white walls, a canvas of expressive, messy green brushstrokes captivated me with its American Impressionist charm. As a child, I was enchanted by this painting that seemed to breathe with life, transporting me to another world.
Years later, I learned that the work was by Charles Harold Davis, founder of the Mystic, Connecticut Impressionist Colony and a key figure in shaping the American Impressionist movement. That discovery transformed childhood wonder into a deeper appreciation for the artistic traditions that would later guide my own path.
Studying at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts — just steps from the Florence Griswold Museum, site of America’s first Impressionist colony — further grounded my practice in this history of place. In 2023, I was invited to contribute a painting to the permanent collection of the Florence Griswold Museum, a full-circle moment that affirmed both my dedication to landscape painting and my connection to this lineage of American art.
Today, each painting is a bridge between past and present — honoring the spirit of New England’s Impressionist heritage while engaging with contemporary concerns. The grandeur of the natural world that inspires me is also at risk. By painting in historic locations such as Old Lyme, Connecticut, the North Shore of Massachusetts, North Central Vermont, and Monhegan Island, Maine, I seek to celebrate nature’s beauty while reminding viewers of our shared responsibility to protect it for future generations.
